When I was working in Chicago before graduate school, I became an expert at putting together transition outfits that could seamlessly go from work to happy hour. I lived in the suburbs, so if I had plans for the evening I would put some extra time into picking my outfits since I didn’t want to have to carry around a bag containing my work clothes all evening, or spend too much time changing into an entirely new outfit.
Washington’s stay at home order was recently extended, which means that we may not need to plan our day-to-night out outfits just yet, but I wanted to put this post together in anticipation of the day when our lives finally return to normal.
A Collared White Shirt + Jeans
This look will take you from casual Friday to a night out with the girls with the simple addition of a black blazer and a switch from sandals to loafers. Both looks are comfortable and chic, and a blazer is one of my favorite going-out pieces. It keeps you warm, and adds a classy touch to the day look. I love the way that loafers look with blazers and jeans separately, so I definitely feel like the white loafers that I added to my evening look here pulls everything together in a way that keeps you looking casual!
A Little Black Dress
You can honestly never go wrong with a little black dress. This particular dress is a vintage Loft shift dress that my mom wore when she was my age, and it is perfect for literally any occasion. For the day, I had it paired with a denim jacket, brown mules, and a matching hat. This look would be perfect for a coffee date or a trip to the farmers market, and easily transitions to a night out with a switch to an edgy leather jacket and heels. Honestly, it’s as simple as that!
A Black Crop Top
This super comfy black crop top from H&M goes with just about anything. It’s super cute with some ripped-hem jeans, platform sandals, and a leather print scrunchie for an easy day consisting of shopping or hanging out at home, and is flawlessly dressed up with a gold pleated skirt, biker jacket, and lace-up heels. Both outfits are super comfy, and I will definitely be making use of both of these looks this summer!
The key to a good day-to-night transition outfit really lies in picking a simple piece to center your day and night outfits around. Once you pick your central piece(s), the rest comes naturally!
